Clinical Study

Over 350 clinical studies show that the Recommended Daily Allowances for Pregnancy and Breastfeeding are outdated, leaving 95% of women taking standard prenatals depleted.

Because you and your baby deserve better, we conducted our own, IRB-approved clinical study of 235 pregnant women. Here’s what we learned: Standard Prenatals fall short in Vitamin D, Vitamin B6, Selenium, and Zinc, which play essential roles in fetal development, immune health, and supporting a full-term birth.* In our clinical study we found that women taking our dosages of Vitamin D, Vitamin B6, Selenium, and Zinc showed significantly higher blood nutrient levels of these nutrients compared to women in the Standard Prenatal group.

Needed Prenatal Multivitamin includes clinically informed levels of the nutrients you really need to fight depletion:

  • 100 mcg Vitamin D3 to support a healthy, full-term birth, respiratory health, fetal development, and bone health
  • 40 mg Vitamin B6 to support through pregnancy discomforts, such as nausea
  • 200 mcg Selenium to support thyroid function and immune health
  • 25 mg Zinc to support you and your baby’s immune systems
  • 200 mg Choline to support your baby’s brain and nervous system development

+ Chromium, Magnesium, Copper, Biotin, Niacin, and Thiamin at meaningfully supportive levels

Nutrition You Can Trust

We formulate our products based on the latest clinical research and clinical insights from women’s health experts. Unlike most women’s vitamins, we don’t rely solely on national nutrition standards, which are often based on bare minimums, and lack research on women’s specific needs.

We’re proud to be recommended by over 15,000 women’s health practitioners.

Each batch of Needed product passes through 2,000+ quality checkpoints — from raw material qualification to finished product release.

How to Use

When to take: Take 3 capsules daily with food, ideally in the morning or at lunch for optimal energy throughout the day.

Flexible dosing: Divide between meals, or take before bedtime if you're feeling too nauseous.

Ready for more: If and when you need more support, try our Prenatal Multivitamin Pro. Or try our Prenatal Multivitamin Powder, an easier way to take your prenatals with your morning smoothie or afternoon snack.

Storage: Store fully sealed in a cool, dry place. Keep out of reach of children. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or are taking medications.

Questions? We have answers.

Thoughtful inquiry is needed.

How is the Multivitamin different from your Multivitamin Pro and Powder?

With our Prenatal Multivitamin, we pared down our original Prenatal Multivitamin Pro (eight capsules or powder) to 3 capsules as we get it, sometimes a giant handful of pills or a powder just isn't in the cards. With our 3 capsules, you can feel confident you are getting 8x more nutrition than leading prenatals, at clinically-studied dosages of key nutrients that make all the difference. If you don’t mind more pills, our Prenatal Multivitamin Pro (8 capsules) delivers more Choline and Magnesium, and also includes Calcium, Lutein, and Zeazanthin.

When should I start taking the Prenatal Multivitamin?

Take it before, during, after pregnancy — and even beyond — for the more supportive nourishment you need to feel your best and help avoid depletion. We like to stress the importance of preconception nutritional preparation and postpartum recovery, so this product is for you even if you are a few years away from having kids or a few years postpartum.

Why does your Prenatal Multivitamin not include Calcium?

Calcium is included at 200mg in Prenatal Multivitamin Pro and not included in Prenatal Multivitamin.

The reason for this is nutrient prioritization. Calcium is a key mineral that we recognize as highly important in the perinatal lifestage. However, our preferred form of Calcium (di-calcium malate, DimaCal(R)) takes up a lot of space in the capsules and would not be compatible with a 3 capsule prenatal. Instead, we continue to recommend a calcium-rich diet to support during the perinatal lifestage, as meeting Calcium needs through diet is generally more realistic, feasible and preferred versus just from supplements. The RDA for Calcium is 1,000mg and providing a meaningful amount via supplements can be challenging in a reasonable serving size.

Why do you offer Iron separately?

We recommend taking Iron away from our Prenatal Multi for optimal absorption as Iron and some other minerals absorb best apart. We also recommend taking only as much as you need, as too much supplemental Iron can generate oxidative stress and alter the gut microbiome.*

We recommend testing your ferritin levels. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or are taking medications.

Our Iron is bound to Glycine for better absorption and digestive comfort.*

Why do the amounts of some of the nutrients in Prenatal Multvitamin exceed the percent Daily Value?

Daily Values (%DV) are based on the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs). These standards reflect the bare minimum needed to avoid a deficiency. In addition, 83% of the studies that informed the current RDAs excluded women.

Significant research suggests that, for certain nutrients, amounts above the RDA may better support maternal and infant outcomes.

Our Prenatal Multivitamin is formulated to reflect both established standards and current clinical research, with dosing decisions guided by safety data and practitioner expertise.

Is your Prenatal Multivitamin vegan, allergen free, and Non-GMO?

Our Prenatal Multivitamin is vegetarian and made without the 9 major allergens and gluten.

Everything makes me nauseous while I am pregnant, will your product work for me?

We know, even 3 capsules can be hard. We suggest taking 1 per meal, if you can. These capsules can also be opened to combine with a smoothie or soft food. We offer additional insights on managing nausea in pregnancy in this article. If you need more information, please download our Getting Started Guide.

Do Needed Prenatal Multivitamins contain Methylated Folate?

Yes. Needed’s Prenatal Multivitamins contain Optifolin+®, a bioavailable, fully bioactive methylfolate (L-5-MTHF) enriched with choline providing superior benefits for healthy methylation, setting it apart from other forms of methylfolate. Other forms of methylfolate utilize salts, such as calcium or glucosamine salts, which need to be present to support the stability of methylfolate but do not enable this nutritionally synergistic benefit.

Methylated (5-MTHF) folate and folic acid are two different forms of folate. 5-MTHF is the active form that the body can directly use, while folic acid is a synthetic form that must be converted before it becomes active. We choose methylated folate because it is the form naturally used by the body and is a well-studied, bioavailable source that supports healthy folate status.

Adequate folate intake supports maternal health by supporting normal cell division and the formation of red blood cells, which are essential for energy production and oxygen delivery during pregnancy.* Folate also plays a critical role in fetal development by supporting neural tube formation and healthy cellular growth and function.* Learn more about why we choose methylated folate here.

What is the scented sachet made with?

This prenatal has every thing I need for nursing in addition to what my naturopath suggests as someone with an autoimmune disease. Thankful this brand was introduce by my naturopath in the first place with the higher dose version of the needed prenatal when we were praying for our first child. And now as a first time mom who forgets some times to take her supplements, it is easier to spot in my lineup and remember because of the design!

    Love it

I’ve been taking this product my whole pregnancy (now 33 weeks) and am more than happy with it. While it’s a lot of pills, the amount of nutrients you get with this product over others is hands down superior. It’s worth it!

    Highly recommend!

My wife’s Naturopath prefers Needed due to the quality and quantities of vitamins and minerals in the prenatal vitamin. She was taking another prenatal previously but switched due to a recommendation from her Naturopath.

    Best prenatal vitamin I've tried.

I've had 2 kids, and tried a few prenatal vitamins. These are the only ones I've had that don't make me nauseous. My youngest is a year now and I still take them to keep up on extra vitamin intake while breastfeeding.
