what answer is needed?
Our powdered format enables us to deliver the most nourishing formulation for mamas and mamas-to-be. It’s 5x better absorbed by the body than a standard pill, and is delivered with other needed nutrients that help your body use the Omega-3 DHA and EPA that you and your baby need.
What is Omega-3?
Omega-3 is critical fat for before, during, and after pregnancy. You cannot make Omega-3, and must obtain it from diet or supplementation. There are three main types of Omega-3, ALA, DHA, and EPA. ALA is found in plants like chia seeds, flax seeds, and walnuts. ALA needs to be converted into the DHA and EPA forms of Omega-3 in order to be used by the body. This conversion process is highly inefficient (often less than 1%), so it is important for mom and baby to consume DHA and EPA directly. Fatty fish and supplements are the two reliable dietary sources. Fish do not make the DHA and EPA, but instead bioaccumulate them from eating algae.
DHA is used to build and maintain healthy function of cell membranes throughout the body, including those of the brain, eyes, ovaries, and skin. EPA to produce signaling molecules called eicosanoids, which play numerous physiological roles including supporting mood, hormone balance, and reducing inflammation. EPA also improves the transport of DHA across the placenta.
What is a liposome and why is it the optimal way to deliver Omega-3?
Liposomes are molecular structures found in nature, such as in breastmilk. Our liposomes pair Omega-3 with natural helper nutrients, including phospholipids from sunflowers. This pairing 1) facilitates near-perfect (90-95%) Omega-3 absorption, a 5x improvement over a standard pill and 2) protects the Omega-3 from harmful oxidation that leads to rancidity. And, as an extra benefit, the phospholipids are a source of choline, which works synergistically with DHA in the body. Overall, liposomes ensure you and your baby to get more of the DHA and EPA you need.
How do I know if I need Omega-3?
Our quiz can help. Many are surprised to find that even if they eat a lot of salmon and sardines, their Omega-3 levels are lower than optimal. Research shows that up to 95% of women are deficient. And, even if you are not deficient, the more Omega-3 in your diet the better you will feel.
What does the powder taste and smell like?
The powder tastes like sunflower lecithin, which has a sweet nutty taste. If you are extra sensitive to taste and smell, you may also detect some algae notes. Most find the taste neutral enough to mix into a variety of food and drinks, including almond milk, smoothies, and lattes.
The powder can often smell stronger than it tastes. If that is the case for you, we suggest letting an open packet sit for a minute or two, take a taste, and then mix it into your food or drink.
How should I consume the powder?
Mix one packet into a single serving of food or drink. Enjoy within 1-2 hours of opening the packets. We do not recommend cooking or baking with the powder. For hot food or drink, please mix once the item is cool enough to consume.
We suggest mixing the powder into lattes, nut butters, salad dressings, and smoothies. Find recipe ideas here.
Why is the dosage set at 300mg DHA + 150mg EPA + 55mg choline?
We set our dosage in partnership with leading scientists and health practitioners across modalities (including MDs, NDs, nutritionists, chinese medicine doctors, midvices, and other birth work professionals) based on research and in-practice experience. Our 300mg of DHA conforms to the American Pregnancy Association per day recommendation. A 2:1 ratio of DHA to EPA allows us to provide multiple benefits for mom and baby, as DHA and EPA have different and often complementary physiological effects. And, as an added benefit to our Omega-3, the powder provides a good source of choline at 55mg.
We recognize that some practitioners recommend higher dosages of Omega-3 for before, during and after pregnancy. Our clinical research suggests that most mamas and mamas-to-be do not need a higher dose than our product delivers, as our powder facilitates near-perfect (90-95%) Omega-3 absorption, a 5x improvement over a standard pill.
What kind of testing do you do?
Our powder is expertly formulated and clinically validated by 10+ years of research and development, including through third-party clinical studies. We test every batch for performance and quality, including through third parties that test for nutritional content, 125+ pesticides and herbicides, heavy metals, microbes, allergens, and other contaminants.
Everything makes me nauseous while I am pregnant, will your product work for me?
Many pregnant mamas find our product more pleasant to take than a pill, and can often find something palatable to mix the powder into, even while nauseated. We are happy to share ideas, just shoot us a note at firstname.lastname@example.org. However, do not stress if nothing is working for you in your early pregnancy, as baby draws most of the Omega-3 it needs in the third trimester, so you can pause your subscription and restart once your nausea has passed (soon, we hope!)
Why should I start a subscription? How does a subscription work?
Daily, continuous supplementation is needed to maintain optimal Omega-3 levels for you and your baby before, during, and after pregnancy. Our subscription ensures you never miss a day of optimal nourishment.
We’ll send you an email each month, a few days before we charge you and ship your next box. You can delay an order, or cancel your subscription at any time, right from your account page.
Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. If you aren’t completely satisfied, send us a note at email@example.com and we’ll be happy to help.
Aren’t other nutrients important for mamas and mamas-to-be, why just Omega-3 and choline?
Many nutrients support fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum recovery. However, Omega-3 and choline are two particularly important nutrients and up to 95% and 92% of women are deficient in these nutrients, respectively. Omega-3 and choline are also lacking or at very low dosages in most prenatal vitamins. We hope with time that this improves as awareness for these key nutrients grows.
I’m not yet pregnant or a mom, is your product still for me?
Yes, our product is tailored for before, during, and after pregnancy, but it is beneficial at all stages of life. Research suggests that a mom’s habits prior to conception influence her
baby’s well-being not just at birth, but also for its entire lifetime. At every stage of life, the more Omega-3 and choline in your diet, the better you will feel. So, it’s never too early to start a subscription. Men can absolutely take the product and enjoy its benefits, too!
Are your products approved by the FDA?
Dietary supplements are regulated like foods, and do not require FDA pre-approval by law, meaning, unlike a drug, the FDA does not formally approve a product before its launch. However, the FDA does regulate both dietary supplements and dietary ingredients. We follow all of the FDA required “current Good Manufacturing Practices” (cGMP) with are the FDA’s most recent (2007) guidelines for ensuring all products are manufactured to specific requirements including identity, strength, quality, and purity. In addition, we go above and beyond the cGMP quality standards in our ingredient sourcing and quality testing.
Why single-serve packets? I hate the extra packaging.
We try to minimize environmental impact wherever we can. However, Omega-3 is highly susceptible to rancidity, and our single-serve packaging is needed to keep our Omega-3 fresh and ready to deliver the biggest benefit you and your baby.
Is your packaging recyclable?
Our supplement boxes and shipping boxes are recyclable and compostable (we use soy-based inks). Though we are working to improve this, our packets should currently be disposed in the trash. Our liposomal powder is sensitive to oxygen from the environment, requiring special packaging. We are always looking at ways to increase our sustainability and decrease our environmental impact, from our ingredient sourcing, to our packaging, fulfillment, and more. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any suggestions.
Does your Omega-3 expire?
It is best to consume our product 1-2 hours within opening the packet. Unopened, the product has a shelf life of approximately 1 year.
When should I take Omega-3?
You can take our Omega-3 at any time throughout the day. Here at Needed HQ, we most-often mix our Omega-3 into a morning smoothie or a late afternoon latte.
Can I take too much Omega-3?
In general, the more Omega-3s in your diet the better you and your baby will feel. However, as a precaution, the FDA recommends taking no more than 3,000mg (3 grams) of Omega-3 a day. In order to exceed that, you would have to consume more than 6 of our packets per day. If you enjoy our product and are tempted to take 6 packets in a day, that’s okay! We just don’t recommend doing so every day.
What happens if I miss a day? Or a few days?
Don't sweat it. We know how busy life can get. You can go ahead a double-up on your packets for any days missed. Going forward, we recommend that you try to take your Omega-3 everyday to see positive, long-lasting results.
How should I store my Omega-3?
We recommend storing your Omega-3 packets in their box on your countertop (in easy eyesight so you remember to take it every day and away from direct sunlight, or in your pantry or fridge.
I eat a lot of Omega-3, why do I need to supplement?
It is very difficult to get enough Omega-3 DHA + EPA from diet alone. Up to 95% of women are deficient.
Although there are a lot of plant-based foods that are rich in Omega-3 (walnuts, chia seeds, flax seeds), they have a different type of Omega-3 called ALA. ALA requires conversion by the body into usable forms of Omega-3, DHA, and EPA. This conversion can be quite an inefficient process.
Fatty fish like salmon or herring is the one reliable food source of DHA and EPA, however many of us do not want to eat fish all the time as it can often come with an environmental price, ingredient and quality trade-offs, or higher levels of heavy metals.
Our diets often contain a lot of Omega-6, an inflammatory type of fat. Omega-3 and Omega-6 compete in the body, so we often have to take in more Omega-3 to meet our needs.
Are your products organic?
Our products are not certified organic, but we source organic ingredients whenever possible.
Is your Omega-3 vegan?
Yes. We source our Omega-3 from algae, the primary food source of marine life. And, all other ingredients used in the product are from plants.
Are your products nut, gluten, and allergen-free?
Yes. Our manufacturers use a certified cleaning process between production runs, and they test for allergens on their production lines. These measures ensure there is no risk for cross contamination.
Are your products GMO-free?
Yes, we are GMO-free.
Omega-3 nutrient test
What’s included with the test?
The test kit includes a blood collection card, lancet, alcohol pad, gauze pad, bandage, and a prepaid return envelope. See here.
What will my results tell me?
The results provide your Omega-3 Index, a % measure of Omega-3s DHA + EPA in your blood.
What is the target range for the Omega-3 Index?
An Omega-3 Index in the range of 8-12% is one indicator of better overall health. An Index of 5% or less (which is common in the US) indicates the highest risk for not having enough Omega-3 for mom or baby in pregnancy.
Why should I take this test rather than a blood-draw test ordered by my doctor?
We use a single drop of blood to measure the Omega-3 Index. This eliminates the need to have your blood drawn at a clinic. You can collect your sample and send it through the mail from the comfort of your own home! And, it is highly accurate. Our testing partner, OmegaQuant, has led research on Omega-3 intake for 30 years, and has over 80 published research papers in this field.
Does the finger prick hurt?
The prick creates a slight pinch.
Are there any risks to testing my Omega-3 levels?
There is minimal physical risk to you from the finger prick. The prick may cause a small amount of pain and bruising, and the site may bleed slightly for a time after the blood is collected. There is also a very rare chance that the stick site could become infected. If this happens, you might require medical treatment.
There is a very small risk associated with the collection of confidential health information. However, we are making every effort to protect your identity.
How long will it take to receive my results?
Your results will be ready within 2 to 3 weeks of our lab receiving your results by mail.
How often should I retest my Omega-3 levels?
Once you have begun your new supplementation routine, we suggest waiting at least 4 months before retesting to allow time for your body to replenish its stores of Omega-3.
If I am deficient, how long will it take to improve my Omega-3 levels?
We suggest supplementing with a quality DHA + EPA like our Omega-3 powder right away. You may feel a difference within a couple of weeks, or, it can take a number of months. While DHA and EPA intake is the primary driver of your Omega-3 Index, your genes, overall health, and lifestyle can affect the Omega-3 Index response to dietary changes. For example, if you are breastfeeding or pregnant, it may take longer to improve your levels as you are still giving so much Omega-3 to baby.
If your Omega-3 Index level is below 5%, we suggest doubling-up on your dosage by taking two packets of Needed’s Omega-3 per day for a period of several months. It is ideal to re-test your levels after 3-6 months of continuous, daily supplementation when your starting levels are sub-optimal.
Is it possible that my Omega-3 levels will be too high?
Whether there is an upper limit of safety for the Index is not clear, but there is likely a value above which there is not likely to be any additional health benefit. We recommend an Omega-3 Index target value of 8-12% because this is where most research indicates a positive effect. Above 12% has not proven to be disadvantageous, but there is little research for high values. Research suggests up to 95% of women of childbearing age are failing to meet their Omega-3 needs. Of the nearly 250 health-conscious women of childbearing age whose Omega-3 levels we’ve tested thus far, 96% were found to be deficient in DHA+EPA.
The results of your test will be kept strictly confidential.
Your results from the test are personal and private. Records will be kept confidential to the extent provided by federal, state, and local law. Only relevant Needed and OmegaQuant team members will have the right to look at your individual test results and records.
Your results will be grouped with the results from other individuals’ tests into a study. Needed and OmegaQuant may share results of this study in marketing, meetings, journals or other forums, but your individual identity will remain secret.
How was Needed founded?
We met as friends, fellow-nutrition nerds, and “someday-to-be” mamas while studying at Stanford’s business school.
Through navigating our own fertility and nutrition journeys, we realized most prenatal nutrition information and products fall far short of empowering real nourishment for mamas-to-be. We started Needed to meet our needs and that of the thousands of women and health practitioners we’ve met along this journey. We’re on a mission to create broader nourishment through better products, information, and community. More about us here.

Why should I take the quiz?
Whether you are a serious nutrition nerd, or just starting off on your nutrition journey, we believe in empowering our consumers with much-needed information on the fundamentals of nutrition. Our quiz is designed to educate you on the benefits of Omega-3 at every stage of life, and to help you determine the optimal dosage of our Omega-3 Liposomal Powder based on your life stage and other needs.
Can I edit my answers to the quiz that I have already taken?
At this time, no. But, go ahead and take the quiz again.
Why do you consider the quiz to be tailored to each person?
Together with our practitioner and scientific advisors, we have designed the quiz to deliver educational information on Omega-3, while collecting the right information from you to guide you towards a starting dosage for you and those you are purchasing for. Keep in mind other factors can affect Omega-3 needs and dosage levels, as we discuss in the quiz. While we're always here to help guide you, we recommend consulting with a health practitioner if you have questions about specific health factors that we haven't touched upon.
Can I take the quiz for someone else?
Yes, we hope you will. Just be sure to answer the questions to the best accuracy you can.
Should I retake the quiz as my needs or life stage changes?
The only constant in nature is change, and that is the same with our bodies. We recognize that nothing in our world is static, so we recommend you retake the quiz as your life stage or lifestyle evolves.

We are extremely thoughtful about all the ingredients we use. We meet with every supplier and only formulate with ingredients found in nature that work synergistically with the body. Some ingredients are grown outside, others are grown in controlled indoor processes when extra rigorous control of the quality of all process materials is required.

Using the highest quality natural ingredients is important to us, which is why we only source from vendors who meet our quality standards and whose focus is on organic, non-GMO ingredients.
Where are your products manufactured?
Our products are proudly manufactured in the USA.
How do you ensure that no cross-contamination occurs at the manufacturer?
Our manufacturers perform cGMP-certified sanitation processes that eliminate the trace of allergens between each production batch, ensuring that what you read on our label is exactly what is going into your body. We confirm this through third-party testing.
